PORTAL DATE MOVED TO JAN 10. This is a coastal field study of intertidal macro algae and an introduction to the cyanotype process in partnership with marine biologist, Alanna Keiffer of Shifting Tides.

On the long pier stretching out into the Tillamook Bay, our workshop will take place in Garibaldi’s stunning and historic US Coast Guard Boathouse. Alanna will introduce various species of Pacific Northwest seaweeds, educating us on Oregon’s marine ecology and sustainable collection practices.

From her algae collection, we’ll use various native species in their wild shapes and compositions - arranging them on speicial papers for the cyanotype method, making three large sheets to take home.

We’ll enjoy snacks and tea from the landdd pop-up café, ending our portal with a group costal exploration before departing back to Portland— at your own speed.

Transportation will be provided for those who need or wish to be driven out in the landdd sprinter van. Details below.

Cyanotype is a camera-less photographic process invented in 1842 that produces prints with a distinctive Prussian blue color. The process involves coating a surface with light-sensitive iron salts, arranging objects or negatives on it, and exposing it to UV light, like sunlight. After exposure, a water rinse develops the image by removing unexposed chemicals, leaving behind a negative image in beautiful blue tones. The resulting prints are records
of the state of the ocean and your creative process, recorded in the blue and white palette of the sea itself.

Our cyanotype workshop willl take place in the Historic US Coast Guard Boat House. This building and pier indicate a rare type of maritime architecture that tells the story of a pivotal chapter in Oregon’s history. Only a handful of these life-saving structures were built and only one or two remain on the west coast. Read more here at the Garibaldi Cultural Heritige Initiative.

Getting there: From Portland, take US-26 West toward the Oregon Coast, passing through the Coast Range until you reach the junction with OR-6 West near Banks; continue on OR-6 through Tillamook State Forest until it meets US-101 South in Tillamook, then follow US-101 South for about 10 miles along the coast until you reach Garibaldi. The whole trip is roughly 85 miles and takes about two hours, offering forested mountain scenery before opening to the Pacific coastline.

Transport Ticket Information: We will depart from landdd at 8 AM in a passenger Sprinter van, to arrive to Garabadli at 10 AM. Located at 714 NW Glisan St. in Downtown Portland. We would suggest Ubering to this location or using public transport. Please arrive 10 minutes early for prompt departure. The trip is a 2 hour drive. We will provide snacks and beverages for the adventure there and back. We will get back to Portland around 4:30-5 pm.

Alanna Kieffer— a marine biologist – who has a decade of marine science education experience on the Oregon Coast and a wild love of food. In 2023 she founded, Shifting Tides, which connects people and place through wild foods by offering education based workshops, including intertidal exploration and foraging on the Oregon coast.

Remember: Our post-workshop marine walk might require some some potentially difficult terrain, including slippery and unstable rocks. Please wear appropriate footgear (e.g. tennis shoes, rainboots, or other hiking footwear). Do keep in mind your feet are likely to be in the water at some point, so rainboots are strongly recommend. The coast is often unpredictable. Events will happen rain or shine. Please be prepared for any and all types of weather. If ocean conditions are unsafe on the day of the event, we will do what we can to educate and have a full lesson while keeping everyone safe.
