Join us for a morning of field birding at Oak Island, where riparian forest, wet meadow, and seasonal marsh converge—supporting a rich diversity of migratory and resident species. Designated an Important Bird Area, Sauvie Island is a critical stopover along the Pacific Flyway. 𓅯

We'll begin with coffee and pastries at the trailhead, followed by a guided walk led by naturalists Katie and Max. Expect to observe waterfowl, raptors, and passerines, with a focus on habitat use, vocalizations, and behavior.

This workshop is in partnership with Nocs Provisions who will be providing us with a range of their optics for birding use in the field!

We'll conclude with solo observation and field journaling using notebooks provided by landdd. Bring your own optics and sketching tools if you wish. *Parking permits must be purchased ahead of time and on your own, it is $10.

Getting there: Once on the island, follow Sauvie Island Road north two miles to Reeder Road. Turn east (right) and drive Reeder Road 1.3 miles to a Y junction. Take the left fork and drive 4.2 miles on Oak Island Road to a small parking lot at road’s end. The final 1.1 miles is gravel. Remember: Pack plenty of water and dress for all weather conditions. Light snacks will be provided & we encourage you to bring extra food on your own terms. If you have any allergies, please bring medications in case of emergency. Parking is limited, carpooling reccomended. Restrooms are available at the trailhead. Be aware of poison-oak and ticks. Not ADA Accessible.

Max Chabra:
Max began birding in the wetlands of Central New York with his college birding club, where he attended and eventually led birding tours for beginners. He conducted bird surveys for the University of Delaware in New York and Washington DC and currently works for the State of Oregon.

Kate Kennedy:
Katie is a friend to all feathered flappers, scaled swimmers, and those who grow and live on earth. She works for Mount Hood Environmental consulting, researching fish, frogs, and the landscapes they occupy.

Birding Ethics: Stay on designated trails and follow Leave No Trace principles. / Keep a respectful distance from birds and nests, especially during breeding season when they are more vulnerable to stress. / Avoid playing bird calls or songs, as this can disrupt behavior and create the false impression of territorial intruders. / For sensitive or protected species, follow all of the above and refrain from posting sightings to public platforms like eBird or iNaturalist to help protect them. / Thank you.
