Lap Loom
x Megan Mesloh

Oct 26 — Portland TextileX Month

MEGAN MESLOH  /  WORKSHOP  /  PORTLAND TEXTILE MONTH / NATURAL DYES  /  WEAVING WORKSHOP  /  OAXACAN WOOL  /

We’re welcoming Portland TextileX Month’s annual October events with textile artist and local weaver, Megan Mesloh, who will be teaching this introductory class in the Landdd showroom on handmade wooden lap looms. We’ll be weaving with naturally dyed Oaxacan wool, sourced directly from small farmers with sustainable practices who we partner with in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico.

With Megan as our guide, we’ll learn the basics of weaving your very own textile on this 15’’ x 15’’ loom. We will cover the essentials of warping, using a shuttle, pattern planning, various weaving techniques, troubleshooting common mistakes, and finally, removing the textile from the loom.

Whether a complete beginner or have some prior experience, this class is suitable for all skill levels, and no prior weaving knowledge is required. We welcome all abilities and ages. All materials and tools will be provided, as well as a beverage and a light snack.

*Our handmade looms/loom tools are a part of our classes and are not avaliable for purchase.

Megan Mesloh is a textile artist and educator living in Hood River, Oregon. She has taught craft curriculum for ten years, with a focus on plant foraging, natural dyes, and weaving. She received a BFA in Textiles from Oregon College of Art and Craft in 2014. Through place-based exploration (foraging plants specific to a region, terrain or season) and a deep curiosity for the natural world, Megan has built a relationship with dye plants and natural fibers as a way to re-connect to where things come from and how they are made.

Portland TextileX Month@portlandtextilemonth

Portland TextileX Month returns this October for its seventh year as we explore the theme of Origin Stories. Textiles, a universal aspect of every culture, undergo transformative changes as communities and individuals migrate, resist, oppress, reconstitute, and adapt, leading to the metamorphosis of both their textiles and identities. All of these changes represent a potential “origin story” for the formation of a new fabric tradition, organization, or artistic form. Delve into the rich tapestry of personal and cultural textile practices being shared this month through a variety of exciting events!

The PTXM Festival exists to build community and foster cross-pollination among textil enthusiasts, artists, businesses, schools, and cultural organizations.
