Fiber Works

Mar/16

NATALIA ORTEGA GAMEZ  —   NATALIA ORTEGA GAMEZ —

As part of our learning series, we have flown Natalia Ortega Gámez from the Dominican Republic to Portland, OR to direct this special workshop. Together on lap looms, we will learn how to work with reed fibers, beads and curated materials to create one of Natalia’s signature “banderas”. See her fiber series here.

Working with a Caribbean color palette, Natalia will share of her history collaborating with Dominican artisans, how to manipulate natural/synthetic fibers and apply her personal weaving techniques to your large-scale bandera piece.

All materials, tools and a variety of found treasures will be provided, including a special selection of local fibers sourced in the Dominican Republic and Oaxaca, Mexico. We encourage students to bring their own fibers or beads, if they wish to incorporate them into their final piece.

Limited tickets available. Please note this is a 4+ hour workshop. Bring bottled water and a snack.
